Welcome to the book “How to Design and Size Solar PV Systems”! This is a nonfiction science book which covers various topics on the process of designing and sizing solar PV systems. The system which can convert the sunlight into electricity using semiconductor devices is called PV (Photovoltaic) System. Bright sunlight is not necessarily required for a PV system in order to operate. Electricity can also be generated by the PV system during cloudy and rainy days from reflected sunlight. This book covers fundamental principles behind working of a solar PV system, use of different components in a system, methodology of sizing these components and how these can be applied to building integrated systems. It includes detailed technical information and step- by-step methodology for design and sizing of off-grid solar PV systems. PV systems can be designed as grid-connected or stand-alone systems. A "stand-alone or off-grid" system is one that provides all of the energy for your house or other uses, such as emergency call boxes on highways, remote cottages, telecom sites, water pumps, and street lighting. It is possible to design standalone systems to function with or without a battery backup. A battery bank in a battery backup system stores energy produced during the day for use at night. Comparing stand-alone systems to other options like utility line extensions, they are frequently more affordable. A "grid-connected" system works to extend the utility company's current electric service. When a grid-connected PV system produces more energy than what a customer needs, the excess energy is exported to the utility, which causes the customer's electric meter to read backward. When energy from the PV system is insufficient to power the building's loads, the customer can instead obtain the necessary power from the utility. Only the net amount of energy received from the electric utility is reflected on the customer's monthly electric utility bill under this arrangement. This book provides readers a strong foundation and a clear understanding of the design of solar PV system. Electrical and mechanical engineers, energy and environmental experts, architects, structural engineers, and other professionals looking to enter the solar industry or work with solar projects in their current line of work will all benefit from the book.
