Top 3 Exercises For Singing Mixed Voice
In this article I am going to share with you my top 3 exercises for singing mixed voice.
Mixed voice is the part of your vocal range between chest and head voice. It allows you to transition into the higher part of your range without any nasty vocal breaks or noticeable changes in tone quality.
Exercise 1.
By far, my favourite exercise is the NG sound.
To experience the NG sound say «Sing» and hold the «ng» sound at the end.
This exercise is very effective in your lower voice because it creates a split resonance between your throat and your nasal cavity. Here’s a tip. Try the NG sound in the middle to high part of your chest voice range. If you wait until the top of chest voice to transition it will be too late.
Exercise 2.
Another great exercise for mix voice is «Muhm». Don’t confuse that with «mum». «Muhm» has a neutral sounding vowel. «UH» While «mum» has a definite «Ah» vowel. It is important to use a neutral sounding vowel as you sing higher because it will stop your larynx from rising. Wide vowels like «AH» and «EE» will cause problems as you sing higher.
Exercise 3.
Finally, the third vocal exercise is «NYA». This is a great way to introduce some nasality to your voice. I do this exercise from the top of my vocal range to chest voice.
This exercise is supposed to be overly nasal. Imagine the wicked witch in «The Wizard of Oz». That is the sound of the «NYA»
All three exercises use some form of nasality to develop mixed voice. Play around with them. Use scales, arpeggios and vocal slides.
